Gout Disease - Gout and Related Symptoms

Gout is a problem that develops after a long period of increase of uric acid crystals in the joints and surroundings tissues. Unwanted symptoms are developed because of gout. These may include warmth, pain, swelling, extreme sensitivity in joints. One of the most seen cases of gout is big toe joint problem, also called podagra. Other symptoms of gout include pain during the night and repeatedly and rapid increase of discomfort lasting for some hours, followed by an easing of the pain in the next days. This pain may last from 2 to 7 days.

  • Gout is a disease that may lead to purplish skin around the affected joint.
  • It may look as an infected area.
  • Fever is another possible symptom developed because of gout.
  • Another problem surely is the limited mobility of the affected joints.

As most of the health problems gout symptoms are related to other medical conditions. Other problems with symptoms similar to those of gout are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or joints infected with bacteria. Unlike gout rheumatoid arthritis often occurs in hips and shoulders which are usually spared in gout. The symptoms are about the same in osteoarthritis too. An infected joint cause's similar symptom with gout but the treatment involves intravenous antibiotics and hospitalization.

By the time people notice the symptoms of gout attackthe uric acid has surely been building up in their blood and had also deposit in one or more of their joints.

Gout Symptoms May Vary from Case to Case

In some cases gout symptoms may occur after an illness or after a surgery. Cases of people developing rare painful attacks are known but it is also known that people might develop chronic gout even if they do not experience often painful attacks. To err is human, to forgive is divine. So we would indeed deem you to be divine if you forgive us for any misunderstandings that may arise in this article on Gout Treatments.

The most common affection is the big toe joint problem. Even is this affection is noticed in most of the cases it is not excluded that other joints of the feet, ankles, knees, wrists, fingers or elbows to be affected too.

We Also Have to Mention that Pseudogout is a Problem that Affects the Joints Too

It is a disease in which calcium deposits in and around the joints. The symptoms like swollen, painful knee, ankle or wrist are similar to symptoms developed in gout. Acute septic arthritis can damage joints too. :D.

What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis resulting from deposits of uric acid crystals formed in the bodies' joints. A gout attack will usually attack only one joint at a time, the big toe being the most common. Other joints that may also be impacted by gout are the feet, ankle, knee, hand, and wrist. The pain will typically last five to fourteen days, at which point the crystals will leave the joint.

Organ Meats, Such as Brain, Kidney, Liver, and Sweetbreads

- Anchovies - Mackerel - Herring - Sardines - Gravies - Dried beans and peas We did not write too elaborate an article on Uric Acid Crystals as it would be then difficult for the common man to read it. We have written this article in such a way that everyone will be able to read and understand it!

What is Uric Acid?

Uric acid helps protect blood vessel linings and serves as an antioxidant. Uric acid is created when purines are broken down by the body. Purines are found in all the cells of the body, and in virtually all food. Some food sources contain a much higher concentration of purines than all the others. Foods with very high purine levels include:

Age. Men are most likely to develop gout between the ages of forty and fifty. Women generally develop gout after menopause. What can we do about gout?

Foods with high and moderately high purine levels include: - All other meat - Other beans, such as kidney, lima, navy, lentil - Some vegetables, such as asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, and spinach

Drink Plenty of Water

Water helps to flush uric acid out of your body. - Lose weight. If you are overweight, losing weight will decrease your uric acid levels. Do not fast, or engage in a rapid weight loss program, because this will actually cause a temporary raise in uric acid levels.

What Causes Gout?

This question is still up in the air. The quick answer is that hyperuricemia, which is an elevated blood level of uric acid, is responsible for gout. With that said, not all patients with hyperuricemia develop gout, and some patients with gout do not have hyperuricemia. Although it is not clear how hyperuricemia relates to gout, one thing is clear; gout is associated with sudden changes in uric acid levels in the blood.

Genetics. A family history of gout increases the chance of developing gout by 20 percent. - Gender. Men are much more likely than women to develop gout.

Self help! There are a number of things that you can do for yourself to decrease your chance of developing gout, or having a recurrence. I must state however that there is no guaranteed way to prevent a gout attack. Important Disclaimer; Many of the following suggestions are intended to decrease your blood uric acid level. Ultimately, this should be your goal, but a sudden drop in your blood uric acid level, may cause a gout attack. I suggest that all lifestyle changes be made at a moderate pace to decrease the risk.

For Most People, Gout Pain Usually Shows Up First in the Joints of the Big Toe

However, as gout progresses, and more and more uric acid builds in the system, it has to find other joints where it can go. This means you might get gout pain in other places that can cause even more pain than that which you might feel when it is in your toe. So its entirely possible that your gout and hip joint pain might very well be related.

The hip joint is where the pelvis and the leg connect, so naturally any type of discomfort there is going to cause difficulties. Just walking or even sitting can be painful, and moving from one position to another can be next to impossible, depending on the amount of pain you have.

One of the first things many do when they have gout and hip joint pain is take NSAIDS. These are pain relievers that can also reduce some of the swelling in the area. That takes some of the pressure off of the joint, and can add some flexibility where it might have been stiff and unforgiving.

Gout, Arthritis & Joint Pain - Everything You Need To Know- Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

Has Taken a Very Long Time for a Major New Gout Drug to be Developed and Approved

Probably the best gout news in over 40 years, is that Febuxostat, which has been given the trade/brand name of Adenuric, has been approved by the European Medicines Agency for marketing in European Union (EU) countries.

IT'S NOT PERFECT In trials its success rate in reducing UA levels down to the important 0 mg/dL (357 mmol/mol) level was not 100%. About 35% of trial patients did not achieve the target. This may have been partly because so many gout sufferers are not UA over-producers, the problem Febuxostat addresses, but under-excretors of uric acid. Our objective of this article on Gout Treatments was to arouse your interest in it. Bring back the acquired knowledge of Gout Treatments, and compare it with what we have printed here.

Will also only be used in gout patients who have chronic hyperuricemia (high UA levels) and gout. So if you're a gout sufferer who lives in a European country that's a member of the EU, you can ask your doctor's opinion about whether Febuxostat is suitable for you. :D.

BENEFITS In large trials Febuxostat (Adenuric) has outperformed Allopurinol, the most common gout medication for long term treatment. Like Allopurinol, it works to lower uric acid production by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, an enzyme required to produce uric acid. In two major studies it reduced uric acid (UA) in more gout sufferers, and more patients reached the target 0 mg/dL level more quickly, than did those on Allopurinol. There has been a gradual introduction to the world of Gout Pain projected in this article. We had done this so that the actual meaning of the article will sink within you. ;)

This Approval Applies Only to EU Countries

Febuxostat has not yet been approved in the United States. If you are reading this from a non-EU country, or the US, you can check with your doctor to find out whether, or when, Febuxostat will be approved in your country. We were a bit tentative when embarking on this project on Purine. However, using the grit and determination we have, we have produced some fine reading material on Purine.

NB. The contents of this article contain medical information not medical advice. Please always discuss remedies with your doctor or other health care professional, before implementing any treatment.

Generally, Febuxostat Has Been More Effective When UA Levels are Below

0 mg/dL (595 mmol/mol). However, even if they have been above this level, it has reduced UA levels down to the target in about 40% of study patients at an 80 mg dosage, and by more at higher dosages.

Noted possible side effects dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhoea, rashes, headaches, hypertension and liver function abnormalities - considered mild ones. In trials none of these side effects were reported in more than 3.5% of trial patients. The most common were liver function abnormalities.

You will not need to be on a low purine diet, and more good news is that it can be prescribed for the elderly. Kidney and liver disease In trials it has performed quite well with patients who have mild kidney disease. 44% of patients achieved the target at an 80 mg dosage, more at higher dosages. Better results than Allopurinol. If you have mild kidney disease (renal impairment) or mild liver problems (hepatic impairment) your doctor will judge whether Adenuric/Febuxostat can be taken safely.
